Your Questions About Marriage Records

Richard asks…

Marriage Records?????????????????

I am trying to find out how I can look up marriage records in the state of Louisiana for free. I just want to see the date people were married. Do they still put it in the paper?

You would actually look it up by the county that the license was taken out it. And you would contact the probate court in that county. Some of them you can look up online for free. Others you would have to go to the courthouse. It is public record so you would have a right to see it but they’re not always free(but 99% of the time it is). They do get posted in the newspaper as well. There’s usually a section called “vital statistics” or “public records” or something similar. So you can always track it down that way if you at least know around what date it would have been. Try going here for louisiana

How can I obtain marriage records for free off the internet?

Every site I have found makes me pay and Ijust want to view a few public marriage records. Do I have to go to my local court house? I want to see records for VA. Any suggestions?

Lukes Love Life answers:

West Virginia has them, for selected counties and years. Illinois does too. Virginia doesn’t, as far as I know.

“Public” means the public can view them, subject to rules on privacy and, sometimes, if they pay a fee. Sealed adoption records, by contrast, are not public. “Public” doesn’t mean they are free, or that a county clerk has to spend tax money to put them on the Internet.

If you have the dates and want the maiden names, you might find them in the vital statistics section or the Women’s pages in old newspapers on microfilm, at the library.

If the town was small enough or the couple well-known enough to rate one, the wedding story is a gold mine; “The groom’s brother Ralph, currently a Junior at State U, acted as best man. The bride’s mother, the former Miss Irene Simpson, wore a light blue. . .”

How can I go about getting marriage records from east london synagogue?

I want to get the marriage records (ketubah) of my great great and great grandparents. How do I go about this thanks for your help.

Lukes Love Life answers:

If it was after 1837 I think all marriages had to be registered, see if you can find them on this free index and if you do you can order the certificates although they will cost you 9.25 pounds each.
